How Frequent Fliers Exploit A Government Program To Get Free Trips : Planet Money : NPR

Turns out some folks are really good at noticing and gaming the system. NPR reports that some people are using their credit cards to buy U. S. Mint $1 presidential coins from the government $1,000 at a time, which are shipped free, to rack up points on their miles credit cards or just bonus points in general. They then deposit the coins in their bank accounts and immediately pay off the credit card purchase.

Pretty damn ingenious to me. According to NPR’s Planet Money team, the only downside to people doing this is they adding to the problematic issue of surplus $1 coins the government isn’t able to properly get into circulation anyway. As it stands, the U. S. Mint has a surplus of $1 billion in $1 Presidential and Sacajawea coins that people won’t buy. By shipping the coins free to the mileage card gamers only to have them redeposited into a bank a couple weeks later, the federal government is losing money on shipping costs and time recounting/accepting them again.

Apartment options in Paris? Which section would you stay?

Hi there folks! A friend and I will be visiting Paris the second week of September and I’m trying to get some recommendations as to in which neighbourhood we should stay. Neither of us has been to Paris before and don’t mind walking around or exploring. Here are some of our character profiles:

+ I would have just turned 31, she’ll be 40
+ both designers so would like some place artsy not touristy
+ don’t mind it being a little further out from the center but not too far
+ would rather rent an apartment than a hotel room
+ staying for 5/6 days
+ we can probably do about $150 – $200/night split between the two of us
+ plan on walking around food markets, shops, and lounging in the parks eating and drinking wine a lot
+ we’re both food people and would love to be near an area close to inexpensive (street), middle and expensive options
+ plan to cook in the apartment, especially for breakfast and a couple of times for dinner
+ don’t mind if there are some brown folks or queer folks around

We’re currently looking on airbnb.com with a few saved. I was going to expand my search to vrbo.com as well after this hellish week of MFA thesis is done.

I know there are at least 4 or 5 people I know who’ve been to Paris, even on a regular basis. After Paris, we’re going on to Lisbon, Portugal and will stay at my friend’s apartment so that’s all good. I can’t wait for this trip, I need a break from stress and the US for a bit.

Thank you so much for any help you can offer!

Trying to figure out this Belgian Self-Employment Visa thing…

I’ve been wondering when is the right time is to start applying for a self-employment visa for Belgium. The main page explaining the process is here. I’ve thought it would take only about 4 months, so there would be a good bit of time

Well CRAP… just even in the course of writing this post, I found this page that says it takes a year to get the Professional card.

Brussels / Bruxelles Bike Rental

Villo.be Bike RentalMy Belgian friend and host, Ward, turned me on to the Villo bike rental program in Brussels. It only costs 30€ per month and can be reserved now, 4 months before my trip. I’ll tackle that later this May after I’m done with all my thesis goodness.

Brussels Ticket, Bought!

A couple of weeks ago, I finally bit the bullet and bought my ticket to Brussels, Belgium. It’s for 75 days, September 8th to November 21st. The first two weeks, I’ll spend about 6 days in Paris and then 5 days in Lisbon, Portugal with my traveling friend, Jenn. Neither of us have been to Paris and I haven’t been back to Lisbon since August 2002. Can you say awesome? Yes, I think you can. And, I can’t wait to see this guy again, lovely Belgian friend that he is.
